UN Resolution on NK May Emerge Wed.

The United Nations’ new draft resolution sanctioning North Korea in the wake of its second nuclear test is expected to emerge as early as Wednesday.

South Korea, Japan and the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council reportedly agreed on Tuesday on a draft resolution that would seek further economic sanctions on Pyongyang and ban the North from participating in arms trading.

Among the economic sanctions sought in the draft are a freezing of North Korea’s overseas assets and accounts as well as an increase in the number of North Korean entities that will face U.N. sanctions.

But the draft resolution is not likely to include stronger inspection of cargo coming in and out of the communist state due to opposition from China and Russia.

If the U.N. Security Council agrees on the draft resolution during their meeting on Wednesday, the council will likely adopt the new resolution during a full session Thursday.
