Dae Jo-young Destroyer to Operate in Somali Waters

The “King Munmu the Great” destroyer that is currently in charge of protecting South Korean ships in Somali waters will be replaced by the KDX-Two destroyer, "Dae Jo-young.”

The Defense Ministry said Tuesday that the 45-hundred ton destroyer, named after the founder of the Balhae Kingdom, will leave port on July 16th. The ministry said the Dae Jo-young will carry out its mission in Somali waters from August 22nd until late November.

Like the King Munmu the Great, the Dae Jo-young will carry 300 officers, including 30 special warfare agents.

The King Munmu the Great will return to the nation around mid-October.
