Gov't to Drop 'Vietnam War' Expression from Bill

The South Korean government has decided to omit the expression “Vietnam War” from a revised bill on the honorable treatment of and support for war veterans.

The decision was made based on consideration of bilateral ties with Hanoi.

A government source says Seoul reviewed a number of different options after Vietnam took issue with the matter.

The term “Vietnam War veterans” in the bill will likely be reworded to “meritorious men who contributed to maintaining world peace.”

The government also plans to make the soldiers who served in Vietnam eligible for veterans’ benefits.
