Senior Tokyo Official Visits Ahead of Poll

The director-general of Japanese Foreign Ministry's Asia-Oceania bureau will visit Seoul Wednesday for talks on overall bilateral ties ahead of next month's election for Japan’s new prime minister.

Kenichiro Sasae will meet his South Korean counterpart Lee Hyuk on Wednesday evening and South Korea's top nuclear negotiator Chun Young-woo on Thursday.

A Foreign Ministry official says the officials will exchange information on North Korea's potential nuclear test and discuss resuming the six-way nuclear talks.

Topics of discussions could also include the controversial Yasukuni Shrine visits, the setting of the two countries' exclusive economic zones and a row over maritime surveys in the East Sea.
