Former Pres. Kim to Receive Van Fleet Award

Former President Kim Dae-jung has been selected as next year's Van Fleet Award winner for his contributions to promoting democracy and inter-Korean relations.

The Korea Society said it will present the award to Kim next month during a ceremony in Seoul that will mark the sixth anniversary of Kim’s acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The New York-based non-governmental organization decided to give out the award in Seoul instead of at the usual New York dinner banquet out of consideration for Kim’s age.

Since 1992, the Korea Society has presented the award to people who have contributed to the development of South Korea-U.S. relations.

Other recipients include former U.S. presidents Jimmy Carter and George Bush, former U.S. Defense Secretary William Perry, and South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon and Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee.
