Day2: Six Parties to Discuss Denuke Process

The six nations involved in North Korea’s denuclearization will launch on the second day of their multilateral talks in Beijing measures Pyongyang must take in the process of nuclear disablement and disclosure.

The countries will hold talks between chief negotiators and bilateral talks on the sidelines to discuss the second-phase nuclear dismantlement process and are expected to discuss on Saturday the incentives Pyongyang will receive in return.

South Korea’s chief negotiator Chun Yung-woo acknowledged that North Korea disagrees with the others on the degree of nuclear dismantlement, but added that an agreement is not impossible given the strong will all participating countries have shown on reaching a consensus.

Christopher Hill, the U.S. representative to the talks, said in an announcement after the first day of talks on Thursday that all parties generally agree on how to disable the North’s nuclear program.

Hill added that the participants had also agreed the second-phase should be carried out by the end of this year.

North Korea has completed the first-phase of nuclear dismantlement under a six-way agreement struck in February, closing down its main nuclear reactor in Yongbyon and receiving 50 thousand tons of heavy fuel oil in return.
