10 Killed in Myanmar, Seoul Elevates Travel Warning

More than ten people reportedly have been killed in Myanmar during a government crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations which have continued for more than ten days. One Japanese journalist is said to be among the victims.

News agencies AFP and The Associated Press quoted a Japanese Foreign Ministry official as saying that the Myanmar government had notified the Japanese embassy that a 50-year-old Japanese photographer was killed during the demonstrations.

The AP reported that troops fired shots into the crowds gathered on the streets of Yangon Thursday, the second day of a crackdown on one of the largest uprisings in the Southeast Asian country in 20 years.

The crackdown began Wednesday with armed forces using tear gas and clubbing the protesters as they arrested up to 200 monks who have been leading the protests.

The South Korean government elevated its travel advisory for Myanmar from "travel alert" to "travel restrain," which advises people to avoid traveling to the country.

Seoul's embassy in Myanmar is working closely with Korean nationals to provide regular updates on the protest situation and to assemble an emergency group to prevent hazardous situations.
