Rules Set for Gov't Work Force Reduction

A special task force on government reorganization has given each ministry detailed criteria for choosing 69-hundred officials to be laid off under the new administration.

The rules, which were finalized with the presidential transition team, call for each ministry to identify unnecessary staff, some of whom will be sent to state-funded agencies. Six thousand workers will be cut this way.

An additional 800 positions will be eliminated on a proportional basis, with each ministry reducing its work force by one percent for every 50 economic regulations it oversees. The move is aimed at reducing both unnecessary staff and promoting deregulation.

A senior official at the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs says after the planned mergers and closures of various ministries, 60 to 75 percent of excess staff in such areas as human resources, finance and administrative affairs will be cut.
