Gov’t-Ruling Party Mull Renegotiating US Beef Imports

The government and the ruling Grand National Party (GNP) have agreed to consider renegotiating the resumption of U.S. beef imports under certain conditions.

GNP spokeswoman Cho Yoon-sun said her party asked the government to review the latest beef agreement with the U.S., focusing on Korea's rights if there's a possible outbreak of mad cow disease or if risk of spreading the disease rises significantly.

In particular, it will examine whether Seoul can inspect all imported U.S. beef products if there are reports of an outbreak and send a quarantine official to the United States to inspect suspected outbreak sites. It will also see whether the government can suspend imports if mad cow disease is confirmed.

Meanwhile, the government and the party decided to require all beef sellers to use place-of-origin labeling on their products. Currently, only restaurants with an area greater than 300 square meters are subject to the rule.

In addition, if mad cow disease is reported in a beef exporting country, then all schools and military bases will stop using its beef products.
