Park, Obama to Apply More Pressure on N. Korea

President Park Geun-hye and U.S. President Barack Obama have agreed to apply further pressure on North Korea to abandon its nuclear ambitions by mobilizing all means possible, including a new UN Security Council resolution.

The presidential office said the two leaders reached the agreement over an emergency phone call that came after North Korea carried out its fifth nuclear test on Friday.

Park held the unscheduled phone call during her official visit to Laos with the U.S. president, who was returning to Washington aboard Air Force One after attending meetings with regional leaders in the Laotian capital.

In particular, during the 15-minute conversation, Obama said that the U.S. will take all measures possible based on the South Korea-U.S. Mutual Defense Treaty, including a nuclear umbrella, to protect South Korea from North Korea’s provocations and threats.
