NYT: N. Korea's Nuke Test Leave US with Uncomfortable Choice

The New York Times says that North Korea’s latest nuclear test leaves the United States with an uncomfortable choice of sticking with incremental sanctions or restarting negotiations.

In an article titled “A Big Blast in North Korea, and Big Questions on U.S. Policy,” the U.S. daily said on Friday that a policy of incremental sanctions has clearly failed to stop the North’s nuclear advances and a hard embargo risks confrontations that the U.S. allies in Asia fear could quickly escalate into war.

It said that Washington may choose other alternatives that range from the highly risky to the repugnant. But it said that restarting talks on Pyongyang’s terms would reward the defiance of its young leader Kim Jong-un with no guarantee that he will dismantle the nuclear program.

The paper said that U.S. President Barack Obama’s successor will face North Korea with more advanced nuclear and missile capabilities than before.
