N. Korean Media Swift in Reporting Park's Impeachment

North Korean media were quick to report on the South Korean parliament's passage to impeach President Park Geun-hye.

The North's propaganda Web site Uriminzokkiri published a news report on the impeachment at around 8 p.m. Friday.

The Web site quoted South Korean news media and said the motion was passed "overwhelmingly."

The report also said that on hearing the news, South Korean citizens gathered outside the National Assembly welcomed the parliamentary passage and called for Park's immediate resignation.

It also said that foreign press also covered the impeachment as breaking news.

Citing South Korean media, the North's state-run Korean Central News Agency also reported that the impeachment was led by opposition parties, civic groups and the public, and that President Park is now suspended from all her powers.

It is unusual for North Korean media to report on affairs in the South in a matter of hours.
