Ex-N. Korean Diplomat: Senior Officials Constantly Being Wiretapped
North Korea’s former deputy ambassador to Britain Thae Yong-ho says the North’s government plants bugs to eavesdrop on senior officials in their own homes.
Thae, who defected to South Korea from the North earlier this year, made the remark during a closed-door meeting with senior members of the National Assembly’s Intelligence Committee on Monday.
According to the former diplomat, North Koreans hail leader Kim Jong-un during the day and secretly watch South Korean dramas at night.
He said the North’s government spies heavily on high-ranking officials, adding that People's Armed Forces Minister Hyon Yong-chol was executed last year for remarks he made at his home.
Thae said that many senior officials in the North fear their children and grandchildren will continue to live like slaves under a long Kim Jong-un leadership.
Thae, who entered South Korea in August with his family, is one of the highest-ranking North Korean diplomats to defect from the communist state.
