US: N. Korea World's Top Military Budget Spender Proportionally

The U.S. State Department says North Korea is spending the most under its defense budget in the world in terms of the budget’s relative size to the scale of its economy.
According to State Department data released on Thursday, North Korea poured 23-point-three percent of its gross domestic product(GDP) based on purchasing power parity(PPP) into the military-related budget between 2004 and 2014.
It is more than twice that of runner-up Oman, which spent eleven-point-four percent of its GDP on its military budget during the period.
Saudi Arabia came in third at eight-point-five percent, followed by South Sudan at eight-point-four percent and Eritrea at six-point-nine percent.
Israel was number six at six-point-five percent.
South Korea spent two-point-six percent of its GDP on the military budget, placing it at 47th.
Among the major military powerhouses, the U.S. was ranked 15th at four-point-three percent, followed by Russia at 20th with three-point-eight percent and the U.K. at 53rd with two-point-three percent.
China was 68th with two percent and Japan 136th with one percent.
