US Intelligence Authorities Vow to Retaliate if N. Korea Launches Cyber Attacks

Senior intelligence officials in the U.S. say North Korea is capable of launching destructive cyber attacks to support its political objectives but warned that the U.S. will mobilize all means to retaliate against such actions.

Voice of America(VOA) said the assessment was made on Thursday during the Senate Armed Services Committee’s hearing on “Foreign Cyber Threats to the U.S.”

National Security Agency Director Admiral Michael Rogers said at the hearing that among key cyber threats that the U.S. faces, attacks coming from North Korea and Iran are a medium threat. However, he was quick to add the problem is that the two countries are willing to pursue their cyber capabilities in a very aggressive manner.

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, on his part, said that it is not easy to get into the North’s cyber network. He said the U.S. decided to take other forms of retaliation against the North for its cyber attack against Sony Pictures Entertainment in 2014 when it realized that it would have to use infrastructure in a third country for a counterattack.

Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence Marcel Lettre II said the U.S. takes different response measures depending on the case when it is hit by a cyber attack. He said the U.S. traditionally slapped sanctions on the perpetrating nation, which has proved to be effective.
