Survey: More Americans Threatened by N. Korea than Russia, China, Iran

A recent survey has shown that more Americans perceive North Korea as a bigger threat to the U.S. than Russia, China and Iran.

According to a Reuters/Ipsos survey conducted on over eleven-hundred adults across the U.S. between January ninth and the 12th, 86 percent labeled North Korea as a threat, higher than the 82 percent that cited Russia as a threat.

Eighty percent of the polled said China and Iran are also threats to their country.

Thirty-four percent of the surveyed said the North is an imminent threat, while 27 percent called the country a serious threat. Sixteen percent said the North is an intermediate threat while eight percent labeled it a minimal threat.

There was just a small gap in perception across the political spectrum, with 89 percent of Republican respondents and 88 percent of Democrats mentioning the North as threatening.

The survey came as the nominees for key foreign relations and security posts under the incoming Donald Trump administration have been warning about the gravity of the North Korean nuclear issue.

Gen. James Mattis, who was tapped by Trump as defense secretary, said during a parliamentary confirmation hearing last Thursday that the North Korean nuclear issue is a serious threat, while Mike Pompeo, nominee for Central Intelligence Agency(CIA) director, included the North among the four imminent threats along with Russia, China and terrorists.

Nominee for Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the North is an enemy to the U.S. along with Iran.
