JCS: Military on Standby in Preparation against N. Korea ICBM Launches

The Joint Chiefs of Staff(JCS) says it believes North Korea can fire intercontinental ballistic missiles at any time and place of the leadership's choosing.

A JCS official said in a news briefing Thursday that the military is closely monitoring Pyongyang’s moves through intelligence cooperation with the U.S. However, the official said that no clear moves to launch missiles have been detected from North Korea.

He refused to confirm whether the North has developed new ICBMs, only saying that the South is keeping a close eye on North Korea’s ICBM development program.

Earlier in the day, Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency reported that South Korean and U.S. intelligence authorities detected circumstantial signs that Pyongyang developed two new missiles presumed to be ICBMs.

The new missiles are analyzed to be about 15 meters long, shorter than existing North Korean ICBMs — the KN-08 and its upgraded version KN-14.
