The White House says President Donald Trump wants to reassure South Korea the U.S. stands behind its ally and will prevent any hostile action from North Korea.
 
White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Trump expressed his support last week in a phone conversation with Acting President and Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn.
 
Spicer said he thinks the threat of North Korea is now the “most prominent issue” facing South Korea and its alliance with the U.S.
 
After the phone call on Jan. 29, the White House said in a statement that Trump reaffirmed the U.S. “ironclad commitment” to the defense of South Korea through the use of extended deterrence.
 
According to the statement, Trump and Hwang also agreed to strengthen joint defense capabilities against North Korea.
