N. Korea Fires Ballistic Missile into East Sea

North Korea fired a ballistic missile early on Sunday in the direction of the East Sea.

South Korea’s Joint Chief of Staff (JCS) said that the missile was launched at 7:55 a.m. Sunday from Banghyon in North Pyongan Province and flew about 500 kilometers. It is the same location from which the North launched the Musudan intermediate-range missiles last year.

The JCS said that the missile is presumed to be a modified Musudan or Nodong missile, not an intercontinental ballistic missile. The Musudan missile is estimated to have a range of about three-thousand kilometers.

A JCS official said the military is further analyzing the missile in cooperation with the United States.

Meanwhile, the Seoul government reportedly contacted its allies including the United States and the United Nations to discuss responses to the North’s latest provocation.

United Nations resolutions ban North Korea from any use of ballistic missile technology.
