US Expert: Sunday's N. Korean Missile Launch Testing Waters for US Policy

A U.S. expert says the latest missile launched by North Korea appears to contain a strategic message.

Ken Gause, a senior North Korea analyst at CAN Corp., said the aim of the ballistic missile launch was to test for potential North Korea policies under the Donald Trump administration.

Gause pointed out the missile flew shorter than the conventional flying ranges of the North’s Nodong or Musudan missiles, concluding that this was Pyongyang’s attempt to test Washington’s responses to its provocative act.

He also noted the North did not want the launch to be seen as an outright provocation toward the U.S., having previously acknowledged the U.S. government’s financial assistance for the victims of the floods in its country.

According to the South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff(JCS), the North launched the ballistic missile at 7:55 a.m. on Sunday from Banghyeon in North Pyongan Province, which flew about 500 kilometers toward the East Sea.
