UN Security Council Condemns N. Korea's Missile Launch

Anchor: The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a press statement condemning North Korea's missile launch. New U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley had some tough words for the North.
Our Kim In-kyung has more.

Report: The UN Security Council(UNSC) held an urgent meeting on Monday and unanimously denounced North Korea for its latest missile provocation.

In a press statement, the UN body said the North's ballistic missile launch on Sunday contributes to the development of nuclear weapon transportation systems and is a clear violation of UNSC resolutions.

The UNSC urged Pyongyang to halt additional provocations and warned that it could take “additional, grave measures” against the North.

It is unusual for the UNSC to convene an emergency meeting following the launch of an intermediate-range missile.

The UNSC appears to be taking the provocation very seriously. This was the first firing since the latest round of sanctions issued against the North in December, as well as the inauguration of the Trump administration in the U.S. The North also aimed to improve its missile system’s technological capabilities with this launch.

The UNSC convened the meeting at the request of South Korea, the U.S. and Japan after the North test-launched the Pukguksong-2 intermediate-range ballistic missile toward the East Sea from Banghyon in North Pyongan Province on Sunday morning.

Japanese Ambassador to the UN Koro Bessho said there was unanimity in condemning the launch.

"We were very unanimous in saying that obviously we have to implement the very robust strong resolution that we already have."

In a separate statement issued prior to the meeting, U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said it is time to hold the North accountable, not with words but actions.
