Foreign Ministers of S. Korea, China Reaffirm Respective Positions on THAAD

Foreign ministers of South Korea and China have reaffirmed their respective positions over the issue of Seoul's plan to deploy a United States advanced THAAD antimissile system on the Korean Peninsula.

A foreign ministry official in Seoul said that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed Beijing’s opposition to the deployment during the Munich Security Conference in Germany on Saturday.

Wang reportedly said that the deployment damages China’s strategic interests, and urged Seoul not to hurry the deployment.

Minister Yun also stressed that a THAAD deployment is Seoul's self-defense measure to counter North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats, adding the North’s latest ballistic missile launch shows why THAAD should be deployed.

The minister also expressed strong concern on China’s retaliatory actions against South Korean businesses, calling on China to take appropriate measures.

However, Wang claimed that the Chinese government is not involved with those actions, which he said are an expression of the anti-Korean sentiment amongst the Chinese people.
