USFK Chief: N. Korea's Use of Nukes Would be Met with Effective, Overwhelming Response
The commander of U.S. Forces Korea and South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command has again warned that “if North Korea uses nuclear weapons, it will be met with an effective and overwhelming response.”
General Vincent Brooks made the remark in an interview with CBS television’s current affairs program, “60 Minutes” that aired last Sunday.
Brooks said that the U.S. makes that same point to its allies and partners, like South Korea and Japan.
Asked by 60 Minutes correspondent Bill Whitaker whether an “effective and overwhelming response” signifies wiping the North off the map, Brooks replied “whatever overwhelms ya.”
Earlier this month when he visited South Korea, U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis had said that any use of nuclear weapons on the U.S. or allies would be met with an "effective and overwhelming" response.
