UN Experts Group Says N. Korea Must be Referred to ICC

A UN group of independent experts on accountability for human rights violations in North Korea has revealed a report calling for the need to refer North Korea to the International Criminal Court(ICC) for its human rights violations.
Japan’s Kyodo News Agency said that Sonja Biserko and Sara Houssain, who are members of the group, unveiled the report on Thursday as the High-level Segment of the 34th session of the UN Human Rights Council(UNHRC) is scheduled to take place from Monday to Wednesday next week in Geneva.
In the report, the group said the North is a country that violates human rights. It added that the international community must make continued efforts via the ICC to hold the North accountable for its crimes against humanity and stressed the need to refer the North to the ICC.
The report emphasized the need to consider establishing a temporary international court like the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia(ICTY) and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda(ICTR).
The latest report will be officially presented at the 34th session of the UNHRC on March 13th in the form of an annexed paper to a report of UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the North by Tomás Ojea Quintana.
