38 North: Continued Activity at Nuke Test Site

The U.S.-based North Korea monitoring Web site "38 North" has unveiled satellite imagery showing continued activity at North Korea’s Punggyeri nuclear test site.

"38 North" said Friday that commercial satellite imagery of the test facility from February 18th shows continued low-level activity at many locations within the installation.

The satellite photo shows that in particular, the shifting of supplies and equipment at the North Portal indicates continuing work inside the test tunnels. These activities suggest continued preparation and maintenance of this portal for use in a new nuclear test.

The Web site said that based on this information North Korea appears to be getting ready for a nuclear test, but it remains unclear when such a test might take place.

"38 North" said that small changes are also detected at the West Portal, as well as the Main Support Area and South Portal.
