Foreign Minister to Raise Voice on Issues of N. Korean Human Rights, Chemical Weapons

South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se will leave for Switzerland on Sunday to attend international conferences in order to raise a voice on the issues of North Korea’s human rights and chemical weapons.

The Foreign Ministry said that Yun will visit Geneva on Monday and Tuesday to attend sessions by the United Nations Human Rights Council and the Conference on Disarmament.

At the UN meeting on human rights, Yun will deliver a keynote speech in which he will stress that the international community should faithfully implement what’s discussed at international meetings on human rights issues. The minister will also express the Seoul government's strong concerns about North Korea's serious human rights situation.

At the Conference on Disarmament, the top diplomat plans to call for concerted efforts by the international community to deal with the North Korean nuclear issue. He also plans to release the government’s position on advancing nuclear nonproliferation.

South Korea has usually sent a vice foreign minister to the UN meeting, but it reportedly raised the level of the country's representative following Malaysian police's announcement that a VX nerve agent was used to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s half brother Kim Jong-nam.
