EU Expands Sanction on N. Korea

The European Union(EU) has expanded sanction measures against North Korea in line with the latest UN Security Resolution denouncing the North’s fifth nuclear test.

The European External Action Service said on Monday that the European Council adopted the legal acts intended to impose further restrictive measures on the regime following the UN Security Council Resolution 2321 that was adopted in November.

Under the new sanctions, the EU will put a limit on its member states in trading coal, steel and iron ores with the North, while adding copper, nickel, silver and zinc to the list of the North Korean products banned for imports. The import of statues made by the North is also banned.

The EU said it has also banned the sales of helicopters and ships to the North, while strengthening its North Korea sanction measures on transport and financial sectors.

The new EU sanction measures make official the EU’s will to implement the North Korea sanctions imposed under the UNSC Resolution 2321.

Meanwhile, the EU is also known to be pushing for its own sanction measures on the North to punish the regime for its continuous nuclear and missile tests. It is said the new individual EU sanction will be announced early next month.
