Malaysia Confirms Body of Kim Jong-nam Using DNA Sample of His Child

The Malaysian government said it has confirmed the identity of the body of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s half-brother Kim Jong-nam, using a DNA sample from one of his children.

According to Reuters, Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi told reporters on Wednesday that the man killed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on February 13th was confirmed to be Kim Jong-nam.

He said the confirmation was made by Malaysian police inspectors through a DNA sample acquired from one of Kim’s children, although he declined to reveal who the child was or whether the child visited Malaysia for the DNA sampling.

The deputy prime minister also said that the Malaysian government has no intention of interfering with North Korean domestic affairs, but the North should ask itself whether it is respecting the international organizations’ decisions and resolutions and its obligations under them.

Malaysian newspaper The Star quoted the deputy prime minister as saying that the Malaysian government had not ruled out handing over Kim’s body to North Korea to secure the return of nine of its nationals.

Earlier this month, the North banned Malaysians from leaving North Korea in protest of Malaysia’s handling of the death of Kim Jong-nam, in which the regime has denied its involvement. Malaysia also placed a similar exit ban on North Koreans.
