Defense Ministry: Surge in Cyber Attacks Against Military Computer Network

The Defense Ministry said on Tuesday that the number of external cyber attacks against the military’s computer network has recently surged.

The ministry spokesman Moon Sang-gyun made the remarks after being asked whether the number of cyber attacks by Chinese hackers has grown due to the planned installment of the THAAD antimissile system in South Korea.

Moon said though the number of such attacks has risen lately, no cases of damage from hacking have been confirmed. He did not specify the source of the attacks.

Moon also underlined that the military's cyber command intranet is completely separate from Internet servers. He noted that the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning upgraded its cyber defense readiness on March ninth and the Defense Ministry raised its Information Operations Condition(INFOCON).

Local media had reported that the number of cyber attacks against the military’s computer network climbed since the Defense Ministry acquired a plot of land from Lotte to deploy THAAD late last month.
