Global Times: N. Korea Giving up Nukes in Return for Security is Best Solution

A Chinese newspaper says the best way to solve North Korea’s nuclear issue is by the North giving up its nuclear weapons in exchange for its security.
The Global Times said Tuesday that Pyongyang “is making continuous progress in rocket research and development” and “theoretically speaking, Pyongyang sooner or later will acquire an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the U.S.”
The English-language daily said that the “international community won't accept the legitimacy of North Korea possessing nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles” and “with Pyongyang's continuous provocation, tougher sanctions will be imposed, enforcing isolation from the outside world for a long time.”
The paper, affiliated with People’s Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party, said if a nuclear war breaks out, the U.S. will suffer physical losses while the North “will be totally wiped out.”
The report said that “North Korea will benefit most if it takes the initiative to abandon nuclear weapons, because it will be able to negotiate a better deal for its security.”
The report comes on the heels of U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s visit to Beijing last weekend. Observers say the tone of the daily’s argument is regarded to be China’s coordinated stance after Tillerson’s meeting with his Chinese counterpart.
