S. Korea Asks N. Korea to Guarantee Safety of S. Korean Football Players

South Korea has asked North Korea to guarantee the safety of South Korean football players, who will visit Pyongyang early next month for a qualifier of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.

A Unification Ministry official said Tuesday that the government has requested that Pyongyang send a document guaranteeing the safety of the players. The official said that the two Koreas also made similar requests in the past before their nationals visited the other sides.

The Korea Football Association(KFA), South Korea’s football governing body, will send the government’s safety guarantee request to the AFC, which will convey it to North Korea. After North Korea issues a written safety guarantee, the KFA will ask the government to approve the players' plan to visit North Korea for the match.

South Korean players will face North Korea for the AFC Asian Cup qualifier on April seventh in Pyongyang.
