UNHRC Set to Adopt N. Korea Human Rights Resolution

The UN Human Rights Council(UNHRC) is expected to adopt a resolution condemning the human rights situation in North Korea later this week during its meeting in Geneva.

Seoul's Foreign Ministry spokesman Cho June-hyuck on Thursday told reporters that the resolution is expected to receive wide support from UN member states.

Cho said the UNHRC has been adopting a resolution on the North's human rights issue since 2003.

He particularly noted that since 2014, the council has been reflecting in the document recommendations made by the UN Commission of Inquiry's report, placing an emphasis on holding rights violators within North Korea accountable.

The spokesman said the Seoul government shares the international community's concern over the "systemic, widespread and grave" violations of human rights perpetrated inside the communist regime.
