Beijing: U.S, China Paying Close Attention to N. Korea's Nuke Issue

The Chinese government has signaled that it will extensively address North Korea’s nuclear and other issues concerning the Korean Peninsula in the China-U.S. summit set to open early next month.

Vice Foreign Minister Zheng Zeguang said in a news conference in Beijing on Friday that the leaders of China and the U.S. will discuss an extensive amount of issues given that the summit will be their first meeting.

Zheng said the leaders will share in-depth views on the issue of advancing a new period in Beijing-Washington relations, adding that both sides are paying close attention to the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.

He added that China adheres to realizing a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula, to maintaining and supporting peace and stability on the peninsula and to resolving problems through dialogue and negotiations.

Zheng said that the peninsula’s current conditions are extremely complex and sensitive, stressing the need for related parties to head toward the same direction with a broad perspective for the sake of their interests and regional peace and stability.

As a way to realize denuclearization and peace on the peninsula, Zheng said his country had voiced the need to pursue the denuclearization process and peace treaty negotiations at the same time. He also said that Beijing had proposed the suspension of the North’s nuclear and missile provocations and of the annual combined military exercises conducted by South Korea and the U.S.
