Gov't to Greenlight N. Korean Participation in 2018 Olympic Games

South Korea says it will allow the participation of North Korea in the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games that will open next February.

Unification Ministry Spokesman Lee Duk-haeng told reporters on Monday that the current sanctions by the UN do not ban the North from participating in international sports events.

Lee said if the North wishes to compete in the winter games, it must first take part in international competitions for qualifications and Seoul will allow its participation in line with related rules and procedures.

He said there is enough time for the North to register a preliminary entry and submit a final entry by early next year.

On Sunday, Gangwon Province Governor Choi Moon-soon said that a senior official of the North’s sports ministry notified him of the North’s willingness to participate in the PyeongChang games during the current International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championship in South Korea.
