Tillerson: China Recognizes N. Korea as Threat

News2017-04-10

Anchor: U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says China has agreed that North Korea's nuclear threat is at a stage that calls for action. Despite criticism that last week's U.S.-China summit has failed to produce specific plans to respond to the North's nuclear arms, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping appear to have engaged in deep conversation regarding the issue.
Our Kim In-kyung has more.

Report: U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has shed more light on U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping's discussions on North Korea held last week.

Explaining the results of the summit on Friday, Tillerson said the two sides noted the urgency of the threat of North Korea’s weapons program and reaffirmed their commitment to a denuclearized Korean Peninsula. The U.S. state secretary also said that Washington is prepared to chart its own course if China is unable to coordinate with the United States on the North’s nuclear issue.

Speaking on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Tillerson said China recognizes that North Korea is threatening its national interests and that action has to be taken.

"China will find ways to influence North Korea's actions to dismantle their nuclear weapons and their missile technology programs."

He said he is hopeful that Washington will be able to cooperate with Beijing to change the North Korean leadership's mindset, adding the U.S. can consider dialogue with the North at that point.

Tillerson also explained that Washington's goal is the North's denuclearization, not regime change.

Meanwhile, U.S. National Security Adviser Herbert McMaster said Sunday that Trump has ordered him to prepare "a full range of options" on North Korea.

He added that it was a "prudent" decision to send the San Diego-based USS Carl Vinson strike group toward the Korean Peninsula in light of the North's nuclear threat.
