'U.S. Citizen Detained in N. Korea'

A Korean American who recently visited Pyongyang has reportedly been detained in North Korea.

According to a source on North Korean affairs on Sunday, the American citizen, identified only by his surname Kim, was arrested by North Korean authorities on Friday afternoon at Pyongyang International Airport on his way out of the country. The reason for the arrest has yet to be revealed.

Kim, in his 50s and a former professor at Yanbian University of Science and Technology, is known to have supported aid and relief programs to North Korea.

He reportedly visited North Korea for about a month to discuss aid plans for the reclusive state.

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service said that it was not aware of Kim’s arrest.
