White House Urges Release of Korean-American Detained in N. Korea

Washington has urged Pyongyang to release a Korean-American recently detained in the North.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said in a regular media briefing on Monday that the Trump administration is absolutely calling for the release of the man adding the U.S. wants to make sure all of their citizens are “protected and returned home.”

Tony Kim, or Kim Sang-deok, a former professor of the Yanbian University of Science and Technology in China, was arrested by the North at the Pyongyang International Airport last Friday as he was waiting to board a plane to leave the country.

He and two other U.S. citizens are currently being detained by the North.

Meanwhile, Spicer positively assessed China’s recent moves to strengthen pressures on the North over Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs say the country “has been very, very helpful in this process and continues to be.”
