'Chinese Military at Highest Alert State along Border with N. Korea'

A civic group based in Hong Kong says the Chinese military has raised its alertness level to its highest combat-ready state along the China-North Korea border amid heightened tension over a possible sixth nuclear test in the North.

The Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy said the maximum readiness was implemented early Tuesday for the Northern Theater Command, which has jurisdiction over the China-North Korea border region, in preparation for a possible war between the U.S. and North Korea.

Quoting the human rights group, the online edition of the Hong Kong-based Oriental Daily said Tuesday that some 200-thousand Chinese troops under the Northern Theater Command have entered an emergency standby mode.

Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun also reported earlier that the Chinese military has been on its second-highest alertness level since April 15th over concerns that the North could conduct another nuclear test to commemorate the 85th anniversary of the establishment of the Korean People's Army on April 25th.
