N. Korean Defectors Hold 1st World Congress, Denounce N. Korean Regime

Representatives of North Korean defectors around the world have gathered together in Brussels to call for accountability for the human rights situations in the North.

During the first “World Congress for North Korean Defectors” held at the Brussels Press Club Europe on Tuesday, around 30 representatives of North Korean defectors living in South Korea, the U.S., Europe and other Asian regions denounced the North Korean regime, saying it's to blame for all kinds of human rights violations being committed in the country.

They also urged the authoritarian regime in Pyongyang to cooperate with the UN’s Commission of Inquiry(COI) on its investigation into the human rights violations against repatriated North Korean defectors, inmates at North Korean political camps and North Korean workers overseas.

They also claimed that the apparent murder of North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un’s half-brother Kim Jong-nam in Malaysia in February is a terrorist act by the North Korean government, calling for an official investigation into the case by the UN.

They said the UN should also hold North Korean leader Kim responsible for the murder of Kim Jong-nam, by taking him to the International Criminal Court.
