US Pacific Commander: THAAD to be Operational in Coming Days

The U.S. military has confirmed that it will soon begin operating the THAAD system currently being deployed to South Korea.

Commander Harry Harris of the U.S. Pacific Command said at a U.S. House Armed Services Committee hearing on Wednesday that the U.S. missile defense system would be operational “in coming days.”

While noting that it will help to better defend South Korea from North Korea’s growing threats, Harris also warned the North will soon be able to develop a ballistic missile that can strike the U.S.

He refuted expectations that even if the regime secures such missiles it will not strike the U.S., saying the U.S. should consider deploying additional missile defense capability to Hawaii.

He admitted there is currently a capability gap between the North’s verbal threats and actual threat, but warned that if the gap is closed it would become an “inflection point” for the U.S.
