NYT: War Not Imminent with N. Korea

The New York Times published a report Wednesday downplaying fears that recently renewed tensions on the Korean Peninsula may flare up into war.
The headline of Wednesday's report says "The Drumbeats Don’t Add Up to Imminent War With North Korea."
It quotes senior Trump administration officials and longtime experts, saying the "drumbeat of bellicose threats and military muscle-flexing on both sides overstates the danger of a clash between the U.S. and North Korea."
U.S. officials are quoted as saying deployments of the submarine Michigan and the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson are aimed less at preparing for a preemptive strike than at discouraging North Korean leader Kim Jong-un from conducting further nuclear or ballistic missile tests.
The report notes Kim Jong-un's continued public appearances, most recently at a pig farm last weekend, as a sign of normalcy.
It also points out South Koreans are not flooding supermarkets to stock up on food, no plans for mass evacuation or additional U.S. military deployments are being implemented, and U.S. embassy diplomats’ families are not being advised to leave the country.
