US Calls on China to Add Pressure on N. Korea

The Donald Trump administration on Thursday urged China to strengthen its economic pressure on North Korea to counter the regime’s nuclear and missile threats.

The U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner made the call in a regular media briefing, saying the U.S. expects actions from both the global community and from China to put pressure on the regime.

He said the U.S.’ message to China is “the time for strategic patience - for waiting North Korea out, for trying to gently nudge it back into talks - is past.”

Toner pointed out that the North has upped the ante and increased its pace of ballistic missile and nuclear testing with the clear intent of pursuing either greater reach for its nuclear weapons or more nuclear weapons.

He said the North’s recent behaviors were “a game changer” and needed to addressed.
