S. Korea, U.S. to Employ All Possible Deterrence Measures against N. Korea

South Korean and U.S. defense authorities have agreed to implement deterrence measures to counter North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats, including a regular deployment of U.S. strategic weapons in South Korea.

The two sides reached the agreement during the Korea-U.S. Integrated Defense Dialogue meeting, which was held in Washington for two days from Wednesday.

South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense said that through their Deterrence Strategy Committee, the two countries agreed to strengthen their capabilities and employ all possible measures to deter the North from using nuclear weapons, weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles.

According to the ministry, the two allies stressed that the THAAD antimissile system is purely a defensive measure aimed at protecting South Korean people and alliance forces against North Korean threats.

South Korea and the U.S. also urged other concerned countries to actively work to resolve the root problem that has led to the THAAD deployment.
