N. Korea Allows Visit by UN Rapporteur on Rights of Disabled

The United Nations point person on the rights of the disabled will visit North Korea next week to inspect the human rights situation in the reclusive regime.
The North has allowed the visit by UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Catalina Devandas Aguilar, however, the intention behind this decision is under speculation.
The UN Human Rights Council announced Thursday the special rapporteur will visit the North from May third to the eighth at the invitation of its government to look into the human rights situation of people with disabilities.
According to a statement by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, this marks the first-ever visit to North Korea by an independent UN expert designated by the Human Rights Council.
Pundits speculate that Pyongyang's decision to allow her visit is to demonstrate its proactive attitude on the issue of human rights of the socially vulnerable, such as the disabled, in an effort to appease global condemnation of its human rights violations.
