Trump Suggests Talks with Kim Jong-un When Appropriate

Anchor: U.S. President Donald Trump said he would meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un under the right circumstances. However, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer was quick to comment that there are a lot of conditions to be met before a meeting could even be considered.
Our Kim Bum-soo has this report.

Report: U.S. President Donald Trump said he is willing to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un “under the right circumstances.”

In an interview with Bloomberg News at the Oval Office on Monday, the U.S. president said if it would be appropriate for him to meet with Kim, he would be "honored to do it."

While labeling his comments as breaking news, Trump added most political people would never make such remarks as his.

"I guess because he is still a head of state, so it is, sort of. There’s a diplomatic piece to this. But the bottom line is, the president going to do what he has to do."

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer tried to restrict the immediate implications of Trump's comments.

"We've got to see their provocative behavior ratcheted down immediately. Those are there's a lot of conditions that I think would have to happen with respect to its behavior. And it's and to show signs of good faith. Clearly the conditions are not there right now."

But Trump's suggestive remarks came after his State Secretary Rex Tillerson made it clear that Washington is not aiming for a regime collapse in the North, and if circumstances present themselves the U.S. will be prepared for talks.

Speaking to CBS News in an interview on "Face the Nation" aired on Sunday, Trump spoke highly of Kim for his ability to deal with "very tough people" around him.

"And at a very young age, he was able to assume power. A lot of people, I'm sure, tried to take that power away, whether it was his uncle or anybody else. And he was able to do it. So obviously, he's a pretty smart cookie."

Analysts say that talks are unlikely anytime soon but Washington has made Kim Jong-un rethink if it's still a good idea to stage more provocations.
