Report: A team of prosecutors at the Defense Ministry concluded eight months of investigations into the cyber attack against the nation’s military cyber command.
The prosecutors said Tuesday that North Korean hackers were behind the attack that took place last September.
Investigators said that the malicious codes and some of the IP addresses used in the attack which traced back to China were the same ones previously used by the North.
North Korean hackers were found to have hacked into a firm that supplies vaccine programs to the Defense Ministry in 2015 and collected key data on the programs.
They then used the data to infiltrate the military's public Web servers and found a point connecting those servers and the military's intranet to steal various military information from the cyber command.
Prosecutors decided to reprimand the head of the Defense Integrated Data Center for failing to properly separate the intranet and internet Web servers.
Prosecutors also decided to seek disciplinary action against 26 people, including the head of the cyber command, for poorly handling the cyber attack.
The Defense Security Command was also reprimanded for failing to detect the undue link between the military Web sites and its intranet.
The Defense Ministry said that it will make sure the military's Web sites and its intranet are thoroughly separated. It also established cyber defense centers in each military service branch to prevent another cyber attack.
