US House to Vote on New N. Korea Sanctions Bill

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives are scheduled to vote Thursday on a new North Korea sanctions bill.
The Korean Interdiction and Modernization of Sanctions Act(H.R.1644) introduced by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce calls for banning the sale and transfer of crude oil and petroleum products to North Korea.
It also calls for sanctioning foreign companies that hire North Korean employees and blocking North Korea's commercial activities online such as the operation of gambling and pornographic Web sites.
The bill also bans foreign banks from holding proxy accounts for North Korean financial institutes and prohibits providing phone, telegram or communication services to the communist regime.
Chairman Royce says foreign banks, particularly in China, are helping North Korean leader Kim Jong-un evade sanctions. He said that banks and firms should be made to choose between doing business with Kim Jong-un or with the United States.
