China says it welcomes dialogue and negotiations between the United States and North Korea on issues surrounding the Korean Peninsula.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Monday during a regular news briefing that China has called for a peaceful resolution to the North Korean nuclear issue.

The spokesman made the remarks in regards to questions about unofficial talks between Washington and Pyongyang in Europe.

He said that China hopes the U.S. and North Korea, as direct parties to the nuclear issue, will contribute to peace on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue and negotiation based on mutual trust.

The so-called one-point-five track talks between North Korean officials and U.S. civilian experts will be held in Norway on Monday and Tuesday, marking the first such contact since the launch of the Donald Trump administration.
