Seoul Seeks Adoption of Anti-N. Korean Nuke Statement at NPT Meeting

South Korea is seeking the adoption of a statement calling for North Korea’s renouncement of its nuclear and missile development during a meeting of the member states of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons(NPT).

A Seoul official said on Wednesday that South Korea and France jointly circulated a draft statement among the NPT members during a preparatory committee for the 2020 NPT Review Conference being held in Vienna, Austria from May second to Friday.

It was known that the draft statement points out that the North’s nuclear and missile tests violate the UN Security Councils’ resolutions, strongly condemns the North over the actions, and urges it to give up its nuclear and missile programs.

It also notes the North’s nuclear and missile programs pose a grave threat to international peace and stability and calls on the North to return to the NPT and allow the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA) inspectors to inspect its nuclear facilities.

South Korea and France plan to officially submit the statement to the preparatory committee on Thursday.
