US Pacific Commander Calls N. Korean Nuke Program Recipe for Disaster

The head of the U.S. military's Pacific Command has warned of the danger of North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, calling it a “recipe for a disaster.”

In a lecture arranged by a Japanese think tank in Tokyo on Wednesday, U.S. Pacific Command Commander Adm. Harry Harris said that "combining nuclear warheads with ballistic technology in the hands of a volatile leader like Kim Jong-un is a recipe for a disaster.”

Noting the North Korean leader is not afraid to fail in public, Harris said every test Kim conducts is a success, because it helps bring the North closer to being able to deliver a nuclear-equipped missile anywhere in the world.

Regarding the North’s Sunday test of an intermediate-range ballistic missile, Harris said it posed a threat to not only the Korean Peninsula, but also to Japan, China, Russia, the U.S. and beyond.

He said the latest provocation affirms that the Kim regime is threatening global peace and stability, urging many countries around the world to strengthen their pressure on the North to make it give up its nuclear and missile programs.
